What is Ashura?
Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram — the day Allah saved Musa (Moses) and his people from Pharaoh. Musa fasted it in gratitude, and the Prophet ﷺ fasted it and encouraged Muslims to do the same.
The Prophet ﷺ said about fasting Ashura: 'I hope from Allah that it expiates the sins of the previous year' (Muslim). It is also recommended to fast the ninth day (Tasu'a) together with the tenth.
